With Pale Morning Drift, you’ll receive personal training, including everything you’ll need to know about gear, flies, and how to catch and safely release trout. From the moment you begin suiting up in your waders to the excitement of feeling a fish on the line, you’ll see why Pale Morning Drift Fly Fishing is the ultimate guide to venturing out in the wild.
What is a Pale Morning Dun?
Pale morning duns are flies that are prevalent on rivers throughout the West, including Utah. Don’t let the name fool you. Pale morning dun hatches take place throughout the day. The season typically runs from June through September. They’re commonly found under low-hanging vegetation, and where there are slow runs and back eddies. They’re a favorite meal for trout!

Pale Morning Drift Prep Info
A common question that many have about fly fishing is what they need to bring along for the experience. No matter where you go, the critical things you’ll need are a fly fishing rod, boots, and waders. With Pale Morning Drift, we provide these essentials for you. We will just need to know your clothing size and shoe size, and we’ll provide the rest!
Here’s what we recommend you bring for your fly fishing trip.
Socks: Bring warm socks! Standing in cold rivers can be chilly on your feet, even with boots.
Pants: Wear long pants and layer up if you get cold easily or if the weather is especially brisk.
Layers: Depending on your preference, bring a few layers on top. If you think you might get cold, chances are you will (especially, early morning and evenings when the sun sets).
Sunglasses & Hat: The water can be especially reflective on a sunny day, so bring a pair of sunglasses or a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes. Wear a hat to protect your head or keep warm in colder weather
Sunscreen: Wear sunscreen if you’re worried about sunburn.
Gloves: An extra pair of mittens or a warm hat never hurts.
You won’t ever regret being extra prepared.
Your Sense of Adventure: If it’s your first time fly fishing, one of the most important things to bring is an optimistic sense of adventure. You will learn techniques, water patterns, flora and fauna, and more. With PMD, you will come away with not only a new skill and a few fish on the line but a renewed sense of appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
